Skittles - 1 The Square, Church Street
Traditional and yet contemporary, this rural establishment with its local ciders on tap, roaring log fire in winter and splendid skittle alley is located in the charming village of West Coker. Originally a 16th century coaching inn, it has since been sympathetically restored and refurbished retaining many of its period features. Owners Dave and Lisa McDonald Greves have recently overseen refurbishment of an upstairs function room complete with open fire-place which provides a popular venue for business lunches and meetings as well as private dinner parties. The high walls with its creeping vines is in keeping with the pleasing and quaint courtyard, and along with its smart wooden tables provides the perfect position for alfresco dining during the summer months. The restaurant proffers the very finest of locally produced food sourced from local West Country suppliers and is freshly prepared daily on the premises. Combined with a superb cellar that is stocked with cask ales, European lagers and wines from around the world, Skittles provides the perfect stage for a warm and welcoming country restaurant atmosphere.
Mulberrys Restaurant and Grill - 9 Union Street
The calm and peaceful atmosphere of the Mulberry is emphasised by the soft, warm lighting and the evocative artwork adorning the walls, whilst the exposed brickwork and sturdy wooden furniture displays an almost earthy, rustic feel. The main purpose of proprietors Garth and Jana Bedford is to provide its clientele with a high standard of freshly prepared food that can be enjoyed in an intimate and relaxed environment. The menus at Mulberrys are specifically designed around seasonal produce and so a starter could very well be a delicious West Country pork terrine with stewed Bramley apples or a smoked haddock fillet with a mature cheddar sauce. Popular main courses comprise grilled beef ‘boerewors’ a spicy South African farmer’s sausage served with creamed mash and a red wine gravy, as well as a wide range of steaks such as fillet, rib-eye, rump, sirloin and T-bone fresh from a sizzling hot grill. A fine dessert to round off the meal might be a fabulous coffee crème brûlée with chocolate and walnut biscotti or perhaps an upside down lemon cheesecake. The restaurant’s cellar provides an impressive array of wines sourced from little-known but nonetheless extraordinary producers that offer exceptional taste as well as value money.
